Lachlan’s Personal Research Topic
Lachlan’s Personal Research Topic:
Group five’s overarching topic is the research of Japan’s culture. This study was initially broken
into three different main areas for us, them being Japanese traditional culture, modern culture,
and pop culture. Of these topics, each group member chose a subtopic that covered multiple or
one of these main areas. I chose the more general subtopic of art. What I am personally focusing
on is not just the literal aspects of art, like paintings and drawings, but also the other branches of
art. For example being performances (Movies and TV), architecture, music, and literature.
I plan to start by looking at art and its historical development from the past to modern times.
Looking as far back to the early Japan period of Japan. To do so I will find various modern and
historical Japanese artists and observe their unique works. Specifically, I would like to talk about
the change from traditional art to the more modern art brought about by the wave of western
influence during the Meiji Period/Restoration. In order to show these changes, I will need to
provide historical sources of artists from the west and currently living in Japan at the time and
how their individual art styles changed. Then I would like to point out the styles that are unique
to traditional Japan and their similarities to modern and pop culture arts of the current Japan day.
To do so I want to show traditional works and how they are a first step or quite similar to the
newer art forms of anime, manga and popular films. I would also like to point out the similarities
and developments from performances to movies and television. In order to contrast the storytelling
values of western countries from the storytelling values of Japan. By highlighting all these areas
of Japanese art I hope to answer and/or make people think about my four main research questions.
How did Japanese art change over time? And why did these changes occur? Do we still see a significant
amount of the traditional Japanese style in modern and pop culture works? Finally, What caused
Japanese art to evolve into the current otaku ‘pop culture’ of Japan? These questions will be the main
base of my research and how I make my observations on the field. During this program, I hope
to visit many different museums and exhibits on Japanese art, such as the open-air museum
near Senshu and the national museum. In order to make observations about Japanese art and
tie those observations in with my own and others. I am quite excited and very interested in
researching this topic. I hope others are just as excited to see the findings of my research.
